Two gently rounded ranges of hills with generally smooth contours traverse the north and south of Ibiza, the largest of the Islas Pityusas, with a maximum length of 48km/30mi and a maximum breadth of 24km/15mi. The southern range, with Atalayasa de San José (476m/1,562ft) as its highest point, is higher than the northern range, which is broken up by a number of depressions. The two ranges are separated by a swathe of lower land extending across the island from west to northeast. The southern tip of the island is occupied by a wide alluvial plain.
Visitors arriving by sea enjoy an excellent view of Ciudad de Ibiza, with its houses rising above the harbor and the massive bastions of the upper town, with the church of Santo Domingo and the cathedral.
