Allariz Attractions
From Orense N 525 runs southeast, heading for Zamora. After crossing the railroad just outside Orense it winds its way up the valley of the Río Barbaña and through an upland region, with large tracts of forest, towards the mountains. 24km/15mi from Orense is Allariz (alt. 470m/1,542ft), capital of Galicia during the Reconquista, which still preserves a 1km/0.75mi long circuit of walls.
Casa de Armoeiro
There are many handsome old mansions in the town, particularly notable being the Casa de Armoeiro, the two parts of which are linked by an arch over the street.
Churches
The most interesting of Allariz's ecclesiastical buildings are the Romanesque church of Santiago (begun 1205), which has a figure of the Virgin by Juan de Juni, and the Monasterio de Santa Clara, with a huge Baroque cloister and a church containing the tombs of Alfonso X's children.
