Stewart Island

Stewart Island lies 30km off the south coast of the South Island, separated from it by the Foveaux Strait. Triangular with many inlets, it has an area of 1700 sq.km and a total coastline of over 1600km.
The island has a much indented coastline and is surrounded by a host of small islands. It is hilly and densely wooded, its principal peaks being Mount Anglem (980m) in the north and mounts Rakeahua (676m) and Allen (749m) in the center.
A marine current off the west coast warms the island and the fairly high hills provide shelter from the prevailing stormy winds. In consequence the climate is surprisingly mild for this latitude (47°S). In addition to peace and quiet and its almost intact natural flora and fauna, the island's attractions include sunsets of great beauty. The densely wooded island is a retreat for numerous endangered species (including kiwis) and large areas are already subject to conservation orders. A national park is being planned.
A small ferry takes 2 hours to make the crossing from Bluff to Halfmoon Bay, the only place of any size on the island. During the main holiday season (December and January) there is a daily service. There are also day trips in light aircraft from Invercargill.
The island's only commercial and tourist center is the village of Halfmoon Bay (Oban). Here too are the only accommodations (a hotel, a lodge, a motel, an inn and a camping park with caravans for hire), which in the main holiday season are rapidly booked up. Advance reservation is essential.
