Mount Pleasant (pop. 62,000) is located on the South Carolina coast. Sweetgrass basket making has been a part of the community for more than 300 years. Slaves from West Africa passed this skill from generation to generation. The town was founded in 1680.
The Boone Hall Plantation, just outside of Mount Pleasant, is considered by many to be one of the finest plantation homes in the South. Also on site are fine examples of 18th C slaves' quarters.
The Charles Pinckney National Historic Site on Sullivan's Island was the plantation of Charles Pinckney, a principal author and signer of the United States Constitution. The site describes his role in the Constitution, has exhibits of his farm, and outlines the role of African-Americans on his farm.

On the east bank of the Cooper River, clearly visible from the town, lies the aircraft carrier USS "Yorktown", which recovered the crew of Apollo 8 in 1968. It is now part of the Maritime Museum on Patriot's Point, whose other major attraction is the nuclear-powered freighter USS "Savannah".
Fighter planes, an aircraft carrier, a nuclear merchant ship and a submarine are a few of the items on display.
