Georgetown, founded in 1729, is built on the spot where the Spaniards landed in 1526. It has an attractive historic district and offers facilities for deep-sea angling.
The Spanish attempted to settle here in 1526 but were driven out by disease. Permanent settlers arrived in the early 18th century. Georgetown has since become an important shipping port.
The Hopsewee Plantation in Georgetown was built more than 260 years ago by Thomas Lynch, a South Carolina delegate to the Continental Congress. The house was constructed of black cypress. Only five families have owned the home. It is furnished with eighteenth and nineteenth century furniture.

The Kaminski House in Georgetown was built in the late 1700s. It is now a museum and features a collection of antiques including a 15th Century Spanish wedding chest, and Chippendale dining room table.

The Prince George Winyah Episcopal Church in Georgetown was built in about 1750 with brick from British ships. The Church was twice held by enemy troops - British troops during the Revolutionary War and Union troops during the Civil War.
The Georgetown region produced half the rice grown in the United States. The Rice Museum built in 1842, is located in the Old Market Building. Through maps, dioramas, artifacts and other exhibits, visitors gain an understanding of a society based on one agricultural crop. The museum also houses the Browns Ferry Vessel, which is the oldest vessel of colonial manufacture in the United States and is on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as other exhibits relating to area history and historical figures.
