Sandton, on the northern outskirts of Johannesburg, is a pleasant residential district in a beautiful setting, with broad tree-lined streets and handsome villas. The town, which now has a population of more than 100,000, was formed in 1966 by combining the Sandown, Bryanston and Sandhurst districts.
Visitors to Johannesburg who want to be near the center but outside the turmoil of the city will find comfortable accommodation in the Sandton hotels. The town's shopping center is probably the largest in Africa and the one with the widest range of wares.
