Prieska Attractions
From Griquatown R 386 runs 120km/75mi southwest to Prieska (pop. 13,000), situated on the banks of the Orange River. The town, founded in 1878, is an agricultural and mining center with copper mines and rich deposits of tiger's eyes (a semi-precious stone).
From an old fort situated on a hill there are superb views of the Doringberg range and the Orange valley. Other features of interest are the Ria Huisamen Aloe Garden (aloes and succulents) in the center of the town and Die Bos Nature Reserve (2km/11\4mi outside the town), populated by large numbers of meerkats and birds.
