Postmasburg Attractions
75km/47mi north of Griquatown is Postmasburg (pop. 16,000), originally a mission station. Soon after the end of the First World War the discovery of diamonds gave a great boost to the development of the town, and in 1926 considerable deposits of manganese were found in the area. Archaeological discoveries a few km/mi northeast of the town have shown that there was mining activity here around a.d. 700.
The Postmasburg diamond mine, like the Big Hole at Kimberley, is now filled with water. Fishing is permitted in this 45m/150ft deep artificial lake.
