Montagu would make an attractive stopover for anyone traveling east from Cape Town, and it is within easy reach for an excursion from Swellendam. To the south of the town is the Langeberg range, to the north the arid landscape of the Little Karoo. Montagu lies in a fruit-growing area, with apple, pear, apricot and peach trees as far as the eye can see. The nearby thermal springs, with water at a temperature of 43°C/109°F, have been used for 200 years. Montagu has a number of agreeable hotels and a surprisingly wide range of restaurants. It is easy for visitors to forget the time and imagine themselves back in the 19th C.
Montagu (founded in 1851) is a remarkable pretty little town, with many Cape Dutch and Georgian houses. On Long Street, the town's main street, alone 14 houses have been declared national monuments.
