Southeast of Johannesburg is Germiston (pop. 130,000), the most important railroad junction in South Africa, with the world's largest gold refinery. The Rand Refinery produces 73% of world output of gold (excluding Russia). The town originated, soon after the first discovery of gold, as a gold-miners' camp on the main seam of gold. (By the time the mine was closed down in 1964 it had yielded 448 tons of gold.) In addition to the gold refinery Germiston now has more than 2,000 other industrial installations.
Founded in 1986, the South African Airways Museum is based at the Transvaal Aviation Club at Rand Airport. Displays include aircraft instruments, timetables and photographs.
