Ficksburg Attractions
The little town of Ficksburg, founded in 1867, lies on the frontier with Lesotho, surrounded by plantations of cherry trees and asparagus fields. It is particularly attractive when the cherry-trees are in blossom in spring (September and October; Cherry Trail running through the plantations - information from tourist office) and during the annual Cherry Festival in November.
Ficksburg has preserved its original character, with handsome sandstone buildings and well cared for parks and gardens. The surrounding area was populated at an early period - no doubt because of its agreeable climate - as is shown by the numerous Bushman paintings in nearby caves and rock overhangs.
