Arniston Attractions

24km/15mi southeast of Bredasdorp is the fishing village of Arniston or Waenhuiskrans. Some of the old fishermen's cottages have been carefully restored, and a luxurious modern holiday village has been built in the same style. Arniston's great attraction is a long, lonely sandy beach.
The village takes its name from a British ship which was wrecked on the nearby cliffs in 1815 with the loss of 372 lives. Its other name of Waenhuiskrans comes from a huge sea-cave 2km/1.25mi south (accessible only at low tide). There are many striking rock formations, the result of erosion by the sea, along this stretch of coast.
