Description
The central hills of St Lucia contains an entire rain forest ecosystem. While there are few roads in, the one at Edmund above Soufrière is probably the best entry point for the average tourist.

The highlight is the St Lucia parrot which while best seen in early morning or late evening, is also seen at other times. Also of note are the St Lucia oriole, the St Lucia wren, the St Lucia blackfinch and Sempers warbler. Two exotic species of plant are the Blue Mahoe and the Honduras Mahogany.

A nature trail circles to a tall waterfall which has eroded its way into the volcanic rock. The trail takes about 2 hours 30 minutes and requires suitable hiking shoes. All those wishing to enter the forest must have a permit and it is an offense not to have one. An Agriculture ministry booth at the start of the trail sells these permits. The trail currently averages 20 to 30 people per day, most of whom come in four wheel drive safari vehicles. The road is very rough and rocky, but can be traversed by car by a good driver. The road near the rain forest entrance is one of the best vistas to see the Pitons.
