Aegina - Oros Profítis Ilías

Oros (1,745ft/532m), the "Mountain", also known as Profítis Ilías after a chapel on top of the hill, is the most prominent landmark in the Saronic Gulf. It can be climbed on a steep and difficult path from the village of Marathón (6km/4mi south of Aíyina).

In Mycenaean times (13th century B.C.) there was an extensive settlement, surrounded by cyclopean walls, on the terraces round the summit. From here there are tremendous views extending over almost the whole island and over the Saronic Gulf to Salamis, the Methourides (Troupika and Revitousa), the Diaporia, Ankístri, the Méthana peninsula and the islands of Poros and Hydra. Below the north side of the summit, near the chapel of the Taxiarkhes, was the fifth century temple of Zeus Panhellenios.
