The little spa of Termas de Sao Pedro do Sul 3km/2mi south has hot sulfur and sodium springs (68°C/154°F) which were already being frequented in Roman times (remains of Roman baths) and are still used. King Afonso Henriques spent some time here receiving treatment for a broken leg after the battle of Badajoz in 1169.
