Santarém - Igreja do Seminário

The main sights of Santarém are south of the Jardim da República. The Praça de Sá da Bandeira was the scene of the gruesome execution in 1357 of Álvaro Gonçales and Pedro Coelho, the murderers of Inês de Castro. The Igreja do Seminário, the seminary church of the former Jesuit convent, is on the west side of the square. It has a Baroque facade (1676) by Baltasar Álvares, and, inside, an impressive high altar, painted wooden ceiling and 17th century azulejo pictures.
