Los Angeles County
Location and general
Santa Monica was founded in 1886 at the southern end of the mountain range bearing the same name and of Santa Monica Bay. Although linked to the Los Angeles road network it remains an independent town, highly thought of as a residential area and resort. Its name
is derived from that of the god-fearing Monica. She was the mother of St Augustine, one of the four Latin Fathers of the Church. In recent years some industrial firms have become established here, the principal one being the Douglas Aircraft Company.
