This impressive ancient site of the pre-Christian Sabian sect is only accessible by a cross-country vehicle and lies almost 60km/37mi southeast of Urfa. Sumatar can be reached either via Sultantepe from where it is 10km/7mi further east or 15km/9mi to the south of Camlidere (Mecrihan on the road to Mardin). The remaining journey of 30km/19mi follows an east-southeast direction through the rocky Tektek mountain range.
