Sanchi - Stupas
The Great Stupa or Stupa 1 is the oldest stone structure in India, constructed in 35 BC. It is a form of Buddhist expression with four entrances that have carved gateways. The Toranas or Gateways are covered with explicit carvings that depict scenes from the life Buddha. The gateways and the balustrade, even though they were made of stone, were carved and built as if made of wood.
