San Luis Obispo - Mission San Luis Obispo Tolosa

History

Little remains of this mission station, once a flourishing cattle center. Today its ruins lie in the town center of San Luis Obispo. After secularization the mission was stated to be the property of the Indians; cattle could be taken away unhindered; the church and other buildings quickly fell into decay. At a public auction in 1845 the mission station was sold for only 510 dollars.

A hotel sprung up directly opposite. More than 100 years ago the church was "modernized" in the New England style, when the bell-tower was given a totally unsuitable spire.
