San Francisco Zoo

San Francisco did not begin to lay out its zoo until quite late (1929), but now it is one of the six most important in the United States. Its designers took the Carl Hagenbeck Zoo in Hamburg, Germany as their model. The chief attractions are the snow leopards, polar bears, elephants, pigmy hippos, white rhinos and the monkeys which inhabit an island of their own.

Must-see attractions nearby:
The enclosure for primates was added in 1985.
Children always enjoy the carousel, Little Puffer Steam Train, and of course the petting zoo. Check with the zoo calendar and daily events to find out about special programs and animal feeding times.
