Description
The California Academy of Sciences was founded in 1853. With its museum built in 1916 it lies in the east of Golden Gate Park.

Its collections are mainly devoted to natural history. In the west wing are displays of minerals, fossils, mammals and birds of North America. The east wing has an African department and rooms for space travel, anthropology, natural history and botany.

Steinhart Aquarium

The Steinhart Aquarium at the end of the courtyard at the California Academy of Sciences, with the great fountain, has a vast collection of aquatic creatures. In its 243 tanks are over 10,000 fish, dolphins and reptiles (including alligators).

Laserium (closed)

The Laserium is one of Golden Gate Park's more unusual attractions. Concerts with laser lights are presented daily.

Wattis Hall of Man

The Wattis Hall of Man has life-size displays illustrating the evolution of Man. Other rooms focus on animals, plants, minerals and precious stones.
