The neighborhood of Old Town is an historic district which apparently dates to the 1820s. The area contains some original adobe houses, which have undergone repairs, and are now open to the public. Some of these contain shops and museums. A portion of the area is designated Old Town State Historic Park and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places but it is free.

But Old Town is more than just museums and historic sites, it's also home to hotels, numerous restaurants and shops, as well as vendors selling their goods from stalls in the street. There are pedestrian only areas that make it a wonderful place to stroll around. The old buildings and Spanish-Mexican style architecture give the whole area a very authentic feel. You may want to allow an afternoon to wander the streets of Old Town San Diego.
