San Diego - Gaslamp Quarter National Historic District

The Gaslamp Quarter lies in the center of the inner town between Broadway and San Diego Bay. The sixteen or so blocks of houses built between 1880 and 1910 comprise most of the Victorian houses still preserved in San Diego, as a result of which it has been declared an historic (listed) district.
As the restoration work in the 35 acre/14 hectare quarter is not yet complete, only a few streets are worth a visit; the main one being Fifth Avenue, between E and F Streets, where houses nos. 832 and 840 are particularly worthy of attention. Some of the streets have already been re-surfaced in red brick; however, it will be some time before the work, estimated to cost 12 million dollars in all, is finished.
