Description
Northeast of the sacred precinct at Samothráki is the site of ancient Palaiopolis, founded by Aeolian Greeks in the seventh century B.C. The massive town walls of the sixth century B.C. extend high up the slopes of the hill. Little is left within the walls. On the site of the ancient acropolis are the ruins of a castle (1431-44) of the Gattelusi family.

At Therma, to the east of Palaiopolis, a hot spring (55°C/131°F) emerges from a 10m/35ft high cone of silica deposits.

The Museum of Palaiopolis, near the Sanctuary of the Great Gods, houses vessels, inscriptions, sculptures as well as a copy of "Nike of Samothrace."
