Description
In the vicinity of Sámi are the stalactitic caves of Frongaráti (southwest) and Melissáni (north- west; underground lake).

This Frongaráti cave belongs to the Kefalloniá village and is connected with the town of Sámi by a three and a half km asphalt road. The cave is 160 m long, 40 m wide, 36 m high and has a water depth of 39 m.

Much of the roof has fallen in and this affords a visitor a rare opportunity to gaze from a considerable height upon a dazzling spectacle of colors in the waters, especially in the middle of the day when the sun's rays fall vertically.

Many characteristic stalactites have formed on its walls.

The cave at Melissáni is actually a partially covered subterranean lake. When the sun is directly overhead, the rays strike the ultramarine water, shattering into a myriad of colors.
