Tips
As the birthplace of Mozart, Salzburg has a special place in the world of music and each summer the Salzburg Festival is one of the major music festivals in the world with sky high demand for tickets and prices to match. The festival runs each year from late July to late August and the operas during the festival are the toughest tickets to get. Performances take place in three festival halls which are under one roof -- Grosses Festspielhaus (2,170 seats), Kleines Festspielhaus (1,384 seats) and Felsenreitschule (1,549 seats). You can mail a request for tickets beginning in December. To increase you chances of getting tickets, be flexible and give alternate dates and seating preferences and order tickets to a number of different events, not just operas. Replies for requests are sent out in April. If you arrive in Salzburg without tickets, your only option is to pay a scalper because operas usually sell out well before the festival and there are rarely returns. These black market prices can be up to six times higher than the normal, astronomically-high prices.
