Located in Old Sacramento, the museum is huge, spread over six buildings, some of which are even originals. On display are 21 beautifully restored locomotives and coaches, along with displays and information on how the railways transformed California and impacted the towns, people, and economy. Some cars are furnished, complete with dining place settings that show the level of comfort once offered on these trains. You can walk through a sleeper car as well.

People of all ages can enjoy the Railroad Museum. The exhibits are interesting and provide great insight into the history of trains and the railroad. There are also model trains and areas geared towards children.

During the summer months the California State Railroad Museum also offers train rides on a steam locomotive along the Sacramento River. This is a great way to see some scenery while taking in a bit of history as well.
