Saarbrücken - St Johann District

On the right bank of the Saar lies Saarbrücken's lively St Johann district, with the town's principal business and shopping streets, the main railroad station (southwest of which, on the banks of the river, is the Kongresshalle, built 1964-67), the Town Hall (Rathaus; 1897-1900) and the Geological Museum of the Saar Mining Company (Saarbergwerke) in Trierer Strasse.

St Johann - Saarland Museum
On St Johann's Bismarckstrasse, which runs parallel to the river, are the State Theater (Staatstheater) and, farther east, the Saarland Museum (Saarland Cultural Foundation), housed in two separate buildings, with the Old Collection and the Modern Gallery.

The Museum of Prehistory and the Early Historical Period (Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte), which also belongs to the Foundation, is on the left bank of the Saar, near the Ludwigskirche.
St Johann Zoo
To the east of St Johann, on the southern slopes of the Eschberg, can be found the Zoo, with some 1,000 animals of 220 different species (African House, Nocturnal Animals House).
St John's Church
St John's Church (St Johann; R.C.) was built by F. J. Stengel in 1754-58. The interior, largely destroyed during the French Revolution, was restored at various times during the 19th and 20th centuries.
