Northwest of the Schloss in Alt Saarbrücken lies Ludwigsplatz, surrounded by Baroque houses. In the center of the square is the Ludwigskirche (by Stengel, 1762-85; Protestant), restored after war damage, with a modern interior.
On the north side of Ludwigsplatz is the Museum of Prehistory and the Early Historical Period (Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte), part of the Saarland Cultural Foundation.
On the left bank of the Saar is the Old Town of Saarbrücken. In Schlossplatz are the Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus), in which is the Adventure Museum, and the Hereditary Prince's Palace, both designed by Stengel, and the 19th C Schloss, built on the site of an earlier palace by Stengel which was destroyed during the French Revolution. From the Schlossgarten there is a fine view of the town. Lower down stands the Late Gothic Schlosskirche (rebuilt 1956-58), with stained glass by G. Meistermann and tombs of the ruling family.
