Upper Saale Valley

The Upper Saale has carved a 150m/500ft deep valley through the Thuringian Hills, which lie at heights of between 500m/1650 and 650m/2,130ft. The windings of the river between the steep slopes of the valley create the contrasting scenic pattern which gives the upper Saale valley its particular charm.

Artificial Lakes
The Upper Saale, between Blankenstein and Saalfeld, now forms a chain of five artificial lakes (reservoirs). On this stretch of the river there are only a few kilometers which show it as it was originally when it was used for floating rafts of logs down from the hills, and on occasion threatened life and property with its spates.
