A statue of the third Viscount Palmerston (1784-1865), for many years the British Foreign Secretary and Prime Minister, stands in the marketplace in Romsey. Broadlands, his former country seat, lies only 0.6mi/1km south. Together with "Capability" Brown's gardens, it was built in 1767. Later ownership of the estate passed to the Mountbatten family; an audio-visual show portrays the life of Lord Mountbatten, the last viceroy and first governor general of India.
