Description
(Local Name: Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica) The Palazzo Barberini now houses the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica (National Gallery of Ancient Art). After the unification of Italy in 1870 the Italian state acquired many famous works of art by the expropriation of the Papal State, and also took over various private collections and acquired other works by gift and purchase, thus building up a great store of art treasures. Since the Second World War the National Gallery has acquired mainly works of the 13th-16th centuries and also of the Baroque period. Among the painters represented are Giovanni da Rimini, Simone Martini, Fra Angelico, Filippo Lippi ("Madonna and Child"), Piero della Francesca, Antoniazzo Romano, Pietro Perugino, Sodoma, Andrea del Sarto, Girolamo Sermoneta, Pietro da Cortona, Raphael ("La Fornarina", the portrait of a baker's daughter of Trastevere - though there is some controversy about this identification), El Greco ("Adoration of the Shepherds", "Nativity" and "Baptism of Christ"), Jacopo and Domenico Tintoretto, Titian ("Venus and Adonis"), Hans Holbein (portrait of Henry VIII, perhaps a copy) and Caravaggio ("Narcissus").
