The Palácio Gustavo Capanema (named after the minister of education responsible for its construction) in Rua da Imprensa, a side street off Avenida Rio Branco, is one of the landmarks of modern architecture, designated by UNESCO as a world cultural monument. The building (1937-45) was designed by a team of architects led by Le Corbusier, with such leading Brazilian architects as Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer. The mural paintings are by Cândido Portinari, the design of the grounds by Burle Marx.
