Ringkøbing - Coastal Region

To the west of Ringkøbing, on the North Sea coast, the tourist center of Søndervig nestles amid the dunes. To the south stretches the promontory of Holmsland Klit with the Norre Lyngvig Lighthouse, 53m/174ft high. Near Hvide Sande is the narrow channel through which ships from Ringkobing Fjord reach the North Sea. In Hvide Sande, one of Denmark's major fishing ports, visitors can see ships of all kinds - trawlers, fishing smacks, etc. The fish are transported to the processing factories in large refrigerated lorries. In the fjord there are shipyards where the vessels are overhauled and repaired. Rides on horseback across the heath and through the dunes down to the beach or night-time rides are favorite leisure pursuits.

Svend Lodberg, a child prodigy and now a famous landscape painter, was born in Hvide Sande in 1945. His pictures show the countryside close to the sea and the fjord, emphasizing the effect of light and the kaleidoscope of colors in the sky; there is a permanent exhibition of his work in Ringkøbing.
