Vitznau-Rigi railroad - Känseli / Rotsock 


Vitznau to Rigi-Kulm, the first cog-railroad in Europe, built 1871 and electrified 1937 (length 7km/4mi), maximum gradient 25% (1 in 4), time 35 minutes). During periods of heavy snow in winter it runs only as far as Staffelhöhe. The line climbs up through Alpine meadows, the views becoming more and more extensive. 4.5km/3mi: Rigi-Kaltbad (1,440 m/4,725ft) lies in a sheltered hollow. Footpath to the First, and in 20minutes to the Känzeli (1,470 m/4,823ft), with fine views of the mountains and a prospect of Weggis, 1,000 m/3,281ft below. 5km/3mi: Staffelhöhe (1,552m/5,092ft). Beyond this the view of Lake Zug appears. 6km/4mi: Staffel (1,606 m/5,269ft), the station for the Rotstock (1,662 m/5,453ft; 15minutes), with a view similar to that from the Kulm. 7km/4mi: Rigi-Kulm (1,750 m/5,742ft). In summer there are also some steam trains.
