Richard's Bay - Umlalazi Nature Reserve

Southwest of Richard's Bay, between N 2 and the sea, is the Umlalazi Nature Reserve (area 1,028 ha/2,539ac), an area of dunes, swamps and mangrove forests. The dense coastal vegetation is relieved by a number of small lakes and a lagoon formed by the Umlalazi River. Among the animals to be seen here are bush pigs, blue, red and gray duikers, striped woodbucks and a small colony of crocodiles, as well as many species of birds.

Accommodation for visitors is available in log cabins and on camping sites. There are two hiking trails, picnic areas and boats for hire.
