The town of Johnston (pop. 28,000) was once a part of Providence. It was incorporated in 1759 and named for August Johnston who was the attorney general. Throughout its history the town has been a farming community although it is now better known for jewelry and silverware manufacturing, fabricated metals, and retail trade.
