St Goarshausen
St Goarshausen, a long straggling place which has preserved much of its medieval core, lies at the foot of Burg Katz (14th C.; restored in 19th C.). At the upper end of the town are two 14th C. watch-towers, relics of its medieval fortifications.

Loreley Rock
The Loreley Rock, near St Goarshausen, is a massive slate crag rising to a height of 132 m/433 ft above the Rhine, here narrowed to only 113 m/125 yd. The fame of the Loreley Rock is due to a legend which became widely popular in the early 19th C. - the story of the nymph who lived on the rock and lured boatmen to their destruction.
