San Marino - Fortresses

All three of the fortresses (Guaita, Cesta Montale) are crowned with three towers which are linked by a watchpath. From the towers there is a splendid view of the Apennines, the plain, Rimini and the sea as far as the Dalmatian coast.

Cesta Fortress
This fortress dates back to the 13th C. It stands on the highest peak of Mount Titano and houses the Museum of Historical Weapons.
Guaita Fortress
This is the first fortress of San Marino which was built in the 11th C. Some cells were used as prisons.
Montale Fortress
This fortress played an important role during struggles with the Malatesta family in the 13th C. Access is restricted to the exterior of the fortress which offers a spectacular view.
Museum of Modern Weapons
On display in the Museum of Modern Weapons in San Marino are 2000 examples of firearms, ammunition and bayonets.
