Mayaguez Attractions
Founded in 1760, Mayagüez derives its name from the Taíno Indian word meaning "place of great waters". It is the third largest city in Puerto Rico, with a population of over 100,000 and an area of 76sq.mi/200sq.km. Originally, Mayagüez defended the Mona Passage and then gained wealth through the exportation of coffee and tuna. After the U.S. takeover Mayagüez was one of the island's first industrial centers. The wealth of the era is evident in the gated palaces of the Las Mesas. Unfortunately, an earthquake in 1918 caused severe damage and since then Mayagüez has seen somewhat of a decline.
Columbus Square
Plaza Colón (Columbus Square) is the hub of Mayagüez and features a statue of Columbus as well as 16 other statues, all originating in Barcelona, Spain.
