With a population of almost 20,000, the municipality of Luquillo stretches from the edge of the El Yunque National Forest to the Atlantic Ocean. More cosmopolitan than other resort towns, the main attractions in Luquillo are the beaches and golf clubs. While Luquillo traces its history to the Taíno Indians and a Spanish settlement in 1797, there
is little to see of historical value. Instead, most visitors come to Luquillo for the beaches that offer opportunities for various water sports.
Luquillo beach is a palm tree lined stretch of sand that offers a fair degree of tranquility considering it is only a short drive from San Juan.
