Founded in 1508, Guánica's name is derived from the Taíno Indian term meaning "Here is a place with water". The Guánica Bay, with a very narrow width and covered with hills and dry forest, is one of Puerto Rico's most unusual coastal features. However, the Bay is deep enough for ocean ships, one of the reasons the USA chose this spot for its landing spot during the Spanish-American War. The major attraction of the area is the Guánica Dry Forest and International Biosphere Reserve (designated by UNESCO), however there are three beaches (Caña Gorda, Manglillo Pequeño and Playa Santa) offering sunning and snorkeling.
