El Yunque National Forest Attractions

El Yunque National Forest, officially known as the Caribbean National Forest, this USA National Forest (called El Yunque) is a well-maintained rain forest, the only one in the National USA forest system. There are many marked trails throughout the forest, and a number of information facilities. El Yunque's peak reaches 3500ft / 1067m above sea level, and covers 43sq.mi /113sq.km, including three-quarters of the island's remaining virgin forest. Spanish law has protected the forest since 1876, however USA management has increased the acreage of the forest over the years.
With more than 1 million visitors in a year, El Yunque National Forest is Puerto Rico's most popular natural attraction, including more than 240 species of trees, and 1,000 species of plants (50 species of orchids alone), as well as various wildlife. Taíno Indian legend designates the peak of El Yunque as the home of the island's protective spirit.
Some of the highlights in El Yunque National Forest include, La Coca Falls, Yokahú Tower, Baño Grande, Baño de Oro, and La Mina Falls.

El Portal Tropical Forest Center

The El Portal Tropical Forest Center in El Yunque National Forest (Caribbean National Forest) is a visitor's center for those looking for information about the National forest. Education about El Yunque and rainforests in general is offered, as well as interactive exhibits. There is a video shown in both Spanish and English. From the El Portal Tropical Forest Center there is a canopy walk through the upper levels of the forest that is quite interesting.
Also on site is a gift shop and snacks available for purchase. The visitor's center is a good first stop when visiting El Yunque.

La Coca Falls

La Coca Falls in El Yunque National Forest features an 85ft / 26m cascade onto boulder formations. Located beside the highway, La Coca Falls is the first major attraction visitors will come to in El Yunque.
Nearby is Yokahú Tower, a 1930s tower that visitors can climb for good views out over the El Yunque National Forest.
