In the east of Puebla state a start was made in 1993 on excavating one of the most important sites in the Central Altiplano, Cantona, which enjoyed its heyday between ad 600 and 950. Lying as it does between the Gulf of Mexico and the Mexican Plateau, this fortified town measuring some 12sq.km/4.6sq.mi was of great importance. Agriculture and the extraction of obsidian added to its standing. The excavation site comprises a row of pyramids, palaces and platforms. New fewer than 24 ball-game courts were discovered, the highest number so far found anywhere in Mesoamerka. At times the site is closed to visitors.
