Wonderboom Nature Reserve

|
On the northern outskirts of Pretoria is the Wonderboom Nature Reserve established to protect a fig-tree (Ficus salicifolia) over 1,000 years old with a trunk 5.5m/18ft in diameter. The branches touching the ground have formed roots. It is said that more than a thousand people can shelter under the branches of this "wonder tree", which has been declared a national monument.
The reserve of which it is the central feature has an area of 90ha/225ac, with picnic spots and barbecue sites. One of the hiking trails in the reserve leads to a hill topped by a small fort dating from the Boer War.
