Tentugal Attractions
About 10km/6mi northeast of Montemor o Velho is the little town of Tentúgal, with the church of Nossa Senhora do Mourao, belonging to the former Carmelite convent (15th C.), the church of the Misericórdia (16th C.) and a number of handsome patrician houses.
Some 3km/2mi northeast of Tentúgal is the church of the Hieronymite convent of Sao Marcos (burned down in 1860) was a dependency of the convent at Belém; it was founded in 1452 by Dona Brites de Meneses, later Afonso V's wife, and subsequently became the burial place of the Silva Meneses family. The decoration of the church, with its clearly articulated structure, betrays the hand of the architect of the convents of Belém and of Santa Cruz in Coimbra.
