The attractive little town of Sao Pedro do Sul in the northern foothills of the Serra do Caramulo at the junction of the Rio Vouga and the Rio Sul, is a popular base for exploring the beautiful wooded hills in the immediate surroundings, particularly the Serra da Gralheira and the Serra do Caramulo.
The village of Cambra is 6km/4mi southwest of Vouzela and is overshadowed by castle ruins. Nearby to the south is the Celtiberian site of Cova de Lobishomem, or "cave of the werewolf".
The little spa of Termas de Sao Pedro do Sul 3km/2mi south has hot sulfur and sodium springs (68°C/154°F) which were already being frequented in Roman times (remains of Roman baths) and are still used. King Afonso Henriques spent some time here receiving treatment for a broken leg after the battle of Badajoz in 1169.
3km/2mi southwest of Termas de Sao Pedro do Sul is the ancient little town of Vouzela (pop. 1,500), dominated by a 12th C. Romanesque and Gothic parish church which is decorated with remarkable sculpture. It has an unusual belfry which is basically just a narrow wall fronting one of the facades.
