Santana Attractions
Santana (420m/1,380ft; pop. 4,500) is chief town of the Comarca de Santana, the most fertile district on Madeira, and one of the most picturesque places on the island, with its thatched houses set amid a profusion of flowers.
Casa das Queimadas
From Santana it is a pleasant excursion to the mountain hut of Casa das Queimadas (883m/2,896ft), continuing south on foot to the Parque das Queimadas on the slopes of the Pico Ruivo (1,861m/6,102ft), which can be climbed from here. From the summit, on clear days (which are rare), there is a magnificent panoramic view of the mountains of Madeira.
