Oeiras (pop. 14,000), 4km/2.5mi west of Caxias, is a popular resort with the summer residence of the Marquês de Pombal, a handsome 18th C. villa set in beautiful gardens (statues, fountains and cascades). The building now belongs to the Gulbenkian Foundation.
